The quietest LRT system in China, the Chongqing LRT, makes friends with the environment

Macao LRT’s construction environment and Chongqing’s are similar. The Chongqing rail transit line 2 was the first LRT system in China that introduced the rubber tire LRT system, which is what the Macao LRT uses. The small turning radius and great climbing ability are the flexibility features of this system. The construction of viaduct is the main construction model. All these features fit into the undulating landscape and small-street environment of Chongqing city.

 

LRT system and residential areas are neighbors and transport becomes convenient

The construction of the Chongqing LRT emphasizes on the fusing of the LRT system into the surrounding environment. Planning of the lines was collaborated with the planning of buildings, the construction of which had not been started. If the buildings had been built and could not connect with the lines or the stations, then the clearing distance would be kept at 3m to 5m wherever possible in order to minimize the impact on residents. Although the Chongqing rail transit line 2 was built on viaduct and near the Liziba station, the shortest clearance distance from buildings was not even 3 m, the smoke free, low noise and low vibration features have made the LRT system famous for being China’s quietest rail transit line. In 2008, the project was awarded for being one of the top 10 “National Environmentally Friendly Construction Projects”.

 

The LRT system has enhanced the development of Chongqing 

The Chongqing rail transit system currently has 3 lines in operation. The average daily passenger number reaches 400,000. With the ongoing planning and construction of future rail transit lines, Chongqing is about to enter the era of a rail lines hub, offering the local residents greater convenience in life, boosting the urban economic development and ending the era of highly and intolerably congested traffic.

The LRT systems of cities like Chongqing and Miami demonstrate the merits of the LRT themselves through detailed construction planning to work around the urban landscape and environments, and good transfer access to other types of transportation, making the LRT system a popular and well-received mass transit system for the public. Macao will learn from the international experiences and perfect the Macao LRT construction project to make it the power for a quality life in Macao.
