Materials of LRT Carriages Not Purchased from Kobe Steel Ltd

The Transportation Infrastructure Office (GIT) received the initial confirmation from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, manufacturer of the carriages of the Macao LRT, that the materials of the train carriage body structure do not originate from Kobe Steel Ltd, Japan. GIT stressed that the train must pass a series of strict tests before it is put into service, so as to ensure that the structure and functionality of the train can meet the international standards; the safety of the train will also be examined and verified by an independent third party institution.

GIT is highly concerned about the event of Kobe Steel Ltd, and request Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to provide information about the relevant materials utilized for the production of the LRT train; it received the initial confirmation from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries that the materials used for the production of the train carriage body structure do not originate from Kobe Steel Ltd, Japan. GIT will pay close attention to the follow-up development of the event. In the course of manufacturing the LRT train, the quality control measures are strictly followed in each stage of works; before the train is moved from the factory and after it arrives at Macao, it has to pass a series of strict tests, including the static tests which examine the general specifications and the functionality of equipment, and the dynamic tests which check the performance of the train, to ensure that the quality meets the international standards in the industry.

In addition, in order to further strengthen the examination of the safety performance of the train, the government also employs international authoritative institutions as the independent safety examiners of the LRT system to examine the suppliers of the train in terms of the design and production of the train and its systems, and the testing process, and to propose their independent professional opinions to the suppliers for follow-up actions, so as to ensure that the train and its systems can satisfy the safety requirements in each stage.
